1. Direct bus from Bogotá — the cheapest option
Direct buses to Villa de Leyva leave Bogotá with operators including Los Libertadores, Flota Valle de Tenza, Omega, Coflonorte and Expreso Gaviota, departing from either the Salitre terminal or the Terminal Norte.
Why it works: it is the cheapest way to get there, with fares between COP $36,000 and $42,000 per person and a journey of roughly 3 to 3.5 hours.
Tip: if you are staying in the north of Bogotá, leaving from the Terminal Norte saves you the city-centre traffic. In high season — long weekends, Easter week, December — buy your ticket in advance.
2. Private car or private transfer — the most comfortable option
In your own vehicle or with a door-to-door private transfer, the trip takes between 2.5 and 3 hours on a fully paved road.
Why it works: you go straight to your hotel, with no stops or waiting around. It makes the most sense if you are travelling as a family, as a couple, or with luggage.
Tip: if you are landing at El Dorado airport and would rather not drive, a private transfer can collect you directly at the terminal and take you to Villa de Leyva without any changes.
3. Organised tour or transfer with stops along the way
Some operators run transfers that include stops at places like the Sisga reservoir or Ráquira, which turns the journey itself into part of the trip.
Why it works: you get to see a couple of nearby towns before you even arrive.
The trade-off: it takes longer than a direct transfer, so it only makes sense if you are not in a hurry.
A few extra things worth knowing
- The distance between Bogotá and Villa de Leyva is roughly 128–140 km, depending on the route you take.
- If you are coming from El Dorado airport, budget extra time for the drive across the city to the terminal or meeting point.
- Long weekends and high season (December–January, Easter week) bring heavier traffic on the road. Leaving early in the morning helps you avoid it.
